The Art Thieves
For FAIR’s Substack, Mary McDonald-Lewis writes about her cancellation.
As an artist, perhaps worst of all, it’s mob-driven theft: a smash-and-grab of my purpose, and of my ability to create. Writ small—just one person losing her craft—this is a minor thing. Writ large, it is grand larceny: stealing that which describes us as a culture and a country, and which mirrors our humanity to us. Art is what makes us human; stealing its creation is a crime against us all.
As I sleepily outlined this essay in bed, late one night, I had a chilling thought: what if all this—all this loss—was for nothing? Have I given up the beating heart of who I am for a failed cause?
But the cause is real, and worth fighting for.
Podcast #248: Bridging Divides Between Democrats and Republicans, with John R. Wood, Jr.
For Quillette, Iona Italia talks to FAIR Advisor John Wood, Jr., about building a stronger democratic consensus in America.
One fundamental truth is that the stability of our systems and our institutions rests not merely or even principally upon which political faction happens to predominate or hold office at a given period of time, but rather the health of the social fabric. And our ability as people to retain if not ideally some affection, then at least a certain baseline of respect and interpersonal trust such that we can actually engage in the project of self-government together, respecting the rules and not feeling ourselves in a zero-sum competition with enemies, such that the rules are only useful insofar as they advance the power of one faction or the other.
BROADview in Brief
For her Substack BROADview, FAIR Advisor Lisa Selin Davis writes about the latest developments in the gender culture wars.
That sounds pretty terrifying, allowing people to discriminate based on gender identity, but I think we’re having a hard time with what that word can mean. We can be discriminating by being choosy. Or by setting boundaries. Or creating categories—like, you know, maybe a sex-specific dating app. Discriminating taste was once a good thing. Now we have to be inclusive or it’s illegal, even if it means that women get screwed—again, not the fun kind.
Stephanie Lepp – Reframing the Big Questions
On The Glenn Show, Glenn Loury talks to Stephanie Lepp about her new project Faces of X, which seeks to integrate opposing perspectives on major issues.
Yale’s “Integrity Project” Is Spreading Misinformation About The Cass Review And Youth Gender Medicine
For his Substack Singal-Minded, Jesse Singal details the many issues involved in Yale’s “Integrity Project,” attacking The Cass Review.
I want to be clear that the argument here is a bit more nuanced than a straightforward financial conflict of interest. It’s also that if you’re a clinician delivering this care, you’re probably doing so because you think it works. You think you’re helping your patients! Why else would you do it? So there’s an intellectual or cognitive-dissonance element, too, to the argument that this should be considered a conflict of interest. Whether or not the members of the McNamara team who work in gender clinics should have listed that work as a conflict, the fact is that they didn’t list any of their many conflicts — including those that are routinely disclosed — and that they do have direct financial, intellectual, and professional incentives to gainsay any document that casts their work in a negative light.
Colorblindness in the Public and Private Sphere
On The Glenn Show, Glenn Loury and John McWhorter discuss with Coleman Hughes his latest book, The End of Race Politics: Arguments for a Colorblind America.
