Dear Friends of FAIR,
Over the past year, we in FAIR have worked hard to overcome our organization’s unique challenges while navigating an increasingly polarized and politicized landscape. We’ve spent a great deal of time and energy honing our messaging, growing and refining our core programs, and rebuilding our Chapter presence in communities. While it’s not always easy to know when (or if) we’re getting it “right,” it’s always a good sign when others decide to join us on our mission. That’s why I’m thrilled to announce the return of two former members of FAIR’s advisory board: Eli Steele and Lisa Bildy.
Eli Steele is a writer and daring, award-winning filmmaker who is no stranger to controversy. “Killing America,” his most recent documentary, investigates the roots of antisemitism that exploded in San Francisco Bay Area high schools after the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel. Shortly after its release, the film was removed from YouTube and Vimeo. In 2020, Eli collaborated with his father, legendary author and scholar Shelby Steele, to produce the documentary “What Killed Michael Brown?” The film, initially banned by Amazon, was reinstated following public outcry and became one of the platform’s top-viewed documentaries. Eli’s earlier work includes “How Jack Became Black,” a documentary that explores the challenges of being multiracial in America, and “Katrina,” an MTV pilot that garnered him the Breakthrough Filmmakers Award. Deaf, black, and Jewish, Eli allows his unique background to inform his worldview but refuses to exploit his identity and intersectionality as a means to power. He is a graduate of Claremont McKenna College and Pepperdine University’s School of Public Policy.
Lisa Bildy is a Canadian lawyer and outspoken advocate for civil rights and civil liberties. She is a graduate of Western Law School and practiced as a trial lawyer with a small litigation firm before taking a hiatus to raise and homeschool her sons. Upon returning to legal practice, Lisa challenged the Law Society of Ontario's Statement of Principles, which compelled lawyers to commit to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of their lives as a condition of practicing law. Believing that regulators had no authority to dictate lawyers’ personal principles, Lisa led a successful campaign in 2018, known as StopSOP, to elect a slate of lawyers to the Law Society who were committed to repealing this new requirement. She later joined the Calgary-based Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms as a staff lawyer before striking out on her own in 2021 to further the cause of defending civil liberties and individual freedoms in Canada.
Welcome back, Eli and Lisa!
Warmly,
Monica Harris
