FAIR in Medicine Webinar:
On Thursday, March 3rd from 8:00PM – 9:30PM EST, FAIR in Medicine will be hosting a webinar titled “Health Professionals in the Nazi Era: Learn from the Past, Understand the Present, Protect the Future,” presented by Matthew Wynia, MD, MPH.
The terrible history of health professional involvement in the Holocaust has had a profound influence on modern healthcare ethics, from the ways we think about race in medicine, genetics, caring for people in detention, abortion, end of life issues, medical research, etc. Virtually every issue in bioethics today is deeply influenced, implicitly or explicitly, by the medical crimes of the Nazi era. Dr. Wynia will explore the legacy of health professional involvement in the Holocaust and how it continues to resonate in health care and society today.
CONTENT WARNING: The Health Professionals in the Nazi Era lecture is intended for adult audiences and contains images and descriptions of genocidal violence and human rights violations.
Ian Rowe Debates Affirmative Action
This week FAIR Advisor Ian Rowe appeared on the New York Times’ podcast The Argument to discuss Affirmative Action with Jay Caspian Kang and host Jane Coaston. According to Rowe, “Given the Supreme Court and overwhelming evidence of Harvard’s discrimination on the basis of skin color, race-based affirmative action in higher ed is dead.”

In our new video, FAIR Advisor Angel Eduardo discusses the influence that Superman had in shaping his ethical outlook on life, despite Superman being “white.” As a child, Eduardo resented and rejected the culturally heightened sensitivities around “identity” and “representation” insinuating that we must physically resemble those we admire. Such a belief was, to Eduardo, “an affront to my intellect.”
Proponents argue that we need more characters to reflect our diverse, multicultural America—and I fully agree. It speaks poorly of a society when its art and media doesn’t fully reflect the vast ethnic and cultural diversity of its people. But we have to be careful not to operate under a shallow and tokenistic idea of diversity.
Thinking that all we need to do is change the color of Superman’s skin and we’ll have done our job is to caricature those we’re aiming to uplift. It comes off as lazy and lacking in creativity. And due to its superficiality, it flies in the face of true diversity and representation—which requires giving characters depth and nuance.
FAIR Perspectives
John McWhorter is an Accociate Professor of linguistics at Columbia University. Along with being an op-ed columnist a the New York Times, John has also written a number of best-selling books on linguistics and race relations, such as The Power of Babel: A Natural History of Language, and Losing the Race: Self Sabotage in Black America.
In this episode, we take a different tack from discussions about John's most recent book Woke Racism. We discuss whether "anti-wokeness" is a new religion, how to engage with and persuade the people John calls "The Elect," how grave a threat "wokeness" really is compared to other contemporary issues, Critical Race Theory in schools, and the consequences of centering race in one's identity. We also go on to chat about language and semantics, the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, the popularity of "Latinx," the ever-evolving social taboo that is "the N-word," and more.
