On February 6, 2022, Dr. Tara Gustilo filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Hennepin Healthcare System, arising from its decision to demote her because her beliefs did not correspond with her skin color and revealed her supposed “internalized whiteness.”
Dr. Gustilo is a highly-regarded, Harvard-educated physician who, until recently, was the Chair of the OB/GYN department at HHS in Minneapolis. In that position, she created a successful program to reflect cultural differences in order to better serve her diverse patients. But over time, her colleagues transformed that program into care that was segregating patients by their skin color. Dr. Gustilo objected, advocating instead for non-segregated care, and criticized concepts of “Critical Race Theory” on her personal social media. HHS then demoted Dr. Gustilo and removed her from her position as Chair of the OB/GYN department.
Dr. Gustilo filed a discrimination charge with the EEOC in 2021, which FAIR supported and funded. She has now followed with a federal lawsuit, alleging violation of her civil and constitutional rights, including under the First Amendment. FAIR is supporting and funding that lawsuit as well.

The Pro-Human Path for Education
In our latest video, FAIR Advisor Ian Rowe and Joyanet Manual talk about the pro-human path for education.
Rowe’s parents, both immigrants from Jamaica, always emphasized education as a common pathway leading to opportunity because it had been central to their own success. Rowe went to high school at Brooklyn Tech, which he describes as being special because of the way it treated each student—as individuals.
Joyanet also had immigrant parents, but from Guatemala. Though the grade schools were poor in Chicago, her parents instilled in her the value of seizing opportunities, hard work, and being resilient in the face of challenges. Because of this, she too was able to attend a selective public high school with special honors programs that helped her fulfill her potential.
Both Rowe and Manual worry that schools today aren’t providing students with the values and opportunities that led them both to success. Because of this, they founded Vertex Partnership Academies—charter schools that educate students with those values.

FAIR Perspectives
Our guest this week on the FAIR Perspectives podcast is Daryl Davis.
Davis is an accomplished jazz and blues musician, author, and one of the most prominent racial justice activists in the world. Daryl’s methods to end racism are unique and groundbreaking. As a traveling musician, he went around the country attempting to dispel racism from those who hated him the most, by befriending members of the Ku Klux Klan, and collecting their robes as they disavowed their hatred. To date, he has come into possession of no less than 200 robes.
Daryl’s pro-human vision of defeating hatred and bringing people together across the largest barriers has infused all of FAIR’s programs. Daryl serves as a member of FAIR’s Board of Advisors, and is also a Senior Fellow at FAIR, working on our corporate diversity programs (available at FAIRdiversity.org), educational programs (available at FAIRstory.org), and much more.
