We are excited to announce that Cathy Simpson will be the first recipient of a grant in the amount of $5,000 from FAIR’s Library Neutrality Fund. As you may know, Cathy lost her job as CEO of Niagara-on-the-lake public library in Ontario, Canada in March after writing an op-ed about the rise of “shadow banning” and the importance of maintaining viewpoint diversity in curating library content. Cathy’s bravery, and the consequences she suffered for speaking out, made international headlines and served as a wake-up call to the rising tide of censorship in an institution that many had assumed was free of illiberal influence. On behalf of all of us at FAIR, we offer our gratitude to our generous Fund contributors and are proud to honor Cathy’s courage, her steadfast support of FAIR’s principles, and her ongoing commitment to advocate for library neutrality. Congratulations, Cathy!
In other news, on August 1, 2024, we launched a legal advocacy campaign to protect the integrity of women’s prisons, focusing on Washington state and specifically the Washington Correctional Center for Women (WCCW). Once a facility exclusively for women, WCCW has recently seen an alarming increase in the transfer of male inmates who identify as transgender or nonbinary. In the wake of these changes, our volunteer team has been contacted by multiple female inmates who have shared harrowing accounts of their experiences being forcibly incarcerated alongside male prisoners. These accounts range from intense emotional distress to physical and sexual assault.
While we recognize the Washington Department of Corrections’ (DOC) obligation to ensure the safety of transgender and nonbinary inmates, we remain steadfast in our belief that the safety and human rights of female inmates must not be compromised in the process.
Thanks to the overwhelming support for this cause, we are making real progress. Our ongoing dialogue with DOC leadership, including an upcoming meeting in early October, is part of our commitment to finding swift and effective solutions.
Our volunteer team has been in direct communication with hundreds of inmates in Washington, and we’ve confirmed that more than 20 administrative grievances have already been filed with the DOC. This documentation is a crucial first step toward restoring a safe environment for women and preserving our ability to take legal action if necessary.

The Coddling of the American Mind Film Screening
Join FAIR, Braver Angles, and Halston Media at the Bedford Playhouse on Tuesday September 17th at 6pm for a reception in the Playhouse Cafe with beer, wine and soft drinks followed by a screening of The Coddling of the American Mind movie at 7pm. Following the film Brent Morden, Angel Eduardo, Dr. David Badillo, Erik Carter, and Sahar Tartak will host a Q&A.
