FAIR Requests DOJ Investigation into the Daniel Marquez Case
On July 14th, FAIR formally requested that the United States Department of Justice open an investigation into the Sheriff’s Office of Lee County, Florida for trampling on the Constitutional and civil rights of 10-year-old Daniel Marquez.
Daniel was arrested at his Florida home on May 28th by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and was subsequently booked, handcuffed, perp-walked, incarcerated for nearly two weeks, and placed under house arrest without any charges having been filed. Within three hours of the arrest, Marceno, who has a history of falsely and publicly accusing kids in this way, posted Daniel’s name, mugshot, and a “perp walk” video on the department’s Facebook page.
This wrongful arrest over childish texts to a friend—speech that is protected by the First Amendment—as well as the circulation of fabricated evidence and a highly prejudicial video of Daniel, is an act of unlawful mistreatment in order to further Sheriff Marceno’s political agenda and convict an innocent child in the court of public opinion.
FAIR is dedicated to protecting the Constitutional and civil rights of all Americans, including children. We sincerely hope the Department of Justice thoroughly investigates this matter—as well as the pattern of abuse exhibited by Sheriff Marceno in other cases—to protect the rights of Daniel and all other citizens in Lee County, Florida.
If you would like to support the Marquez family, please consider donating to the family’s legal defense fund.
FAIR Legal Sends Letter to Health Resources and Services Administration Over Discriminatory Grant Policies
As part of its recent investigations into funding programs at medical schools, FAIR Legal uncovered a federal grant that appears to blatantly violate the Constitution’s equal protection guarantees and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.
The Centers of Excellence (COE) grant is administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), a federal agency under Health and Human Services. The HRSA has explicitly stated that the COE grant is only available to medical schools that have certain minimum percentages of minority students, and to provide stipends only to minority students.
By restricting access to the COE grant on a school’s racial composition and access to a stipend based solely on a student’s skin color, HRSA violated the Constitution’s equal protection guarantees.
This week, FAIR Legal sent a letter to the HRSA urging it to immediately remove these discriminatory requirements. FAIR will continue advocating for COE-funded programs being open everyone, regardless of their immutable characteristics.
FAIR in Medicine Fellowship for Graduate Students in Healthcare
FAIR in Medicine, the official network of healthcare professionals advancing FAIR’s mission in medicine and science, is hosting a Fellowship for Graduate Students in Healthcare. This is an opportunity for medical students and graduate students in healthcare-related fields to learn about FAIR’s tools, strategies, and principles of peaceful change, and to spread FAIR’s message on campus or in healthcare settings.
Fellows will help promote FAIR’s message by participating in a FAIR project, which they will share through their networks at their school or workplace. Projects may include working on webinars, podcasts, writing, research, and planning virtual or in-person events.
Applications are open July 1st – August 31st.

Resolving the Race(ism) Dilemma Conference
On September 24th in Lexington, Massachusetts, join FAIR Advisors Dr. Sheena Mason and Greg Thomas, along with Dr. Carlos Hoyt, for a day-long conference designed for everyone interested in overcoming racism—teachers, parents, scientists, scholars, social justice leaders, mental health professionals, journalists, and political leaders.
Learn how racialization produces the illusion of “race” and racism, how to deracialize your worldview, practice antiracialization, and recognize the racelessness of the human species. Explore methods of translating the misleading language of “race” into the actual issues that drive discrimination and oppression. Build connections with others who are eager to not only understand how to move beyond racism but take meaningful action, and consider joining an effort to improve our government's approach to addressing race-based discrimination—one that does not require perpetuating self-racialization.
FAIR Perspectives Episode 23: Can Education Fix Society? with William Reusch
This week on FAIR Perspectives, we speak with William Reusch. William is a Los Angeles-based high school teacher, social scientist, and host of the Cylinder Radio podcast, which focuses on deep explorations of controversial and contentious topics. Through his work, Will is hoping to change the standard school model from one that exchanges imagination for compliance, to one that uses imagination to innovate.
We discuss his role as an educator in public and private schools, political differences amongst teachers, his run-ins with Nikole Hannah Jones, Marc Lamont Hill, and other proponents of CRT, tackling controversial topics in the classroom, CRT in K-12 education, the increasing distrust between parents and teachers, and his approach to constructive engagement on social media.
Tune in on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts!
